The idea that symbols are what you make of them was driven home to me over two decades ago, a year after some (now) close friends had immigrated to the USA from what was then the Soviet Union. As I entered their apartment shortly before the turn of the new year, I saw an evergreen tree festooned with decorations and small statue of a fat, jolly looking elderly gentleman.
I cautioned the mother of two young children in the family that some of their Jewish relatives, who had sponsored their immigration, might be unhappy to to see Christian symbols in their home. The response was an arresting one:
Christian symbols? That’s a New Year’s tree, and that’s Father Frost.
Oh.
