  1. I find it fascinating what Peter Chowka had to say on history requirements for students in the 50s and early 60s. I was required to take both US History and world History as well as covering the Constitution in high school . Then again when I started college as an engineering student, US history and a course on the Constitution was a requirement for graduation or if you could pass a standardized test on those subjects you could be exempted. Good luck on finding that in colleges today or even in high schools. As for the civil rights movement at the time of MLK, it had a profound impact on the place of blacks in U.S. society. This transition to racism very much came to the forefront under Obama. It certainly was not a big issue in the early 90s prior to Bill Clinton, who claimed to be the first “black” President. Of course it has gotten worse ever since Obama took office.
